The smart city concept aims at having cities that use technology to tackle most of their challenges. As much as we love to have technology running our cities, we all agree that the number one thing that should be taken care of is the smart city  environment. In a smart city, the capital resources are managed together with the knowledge available in a wise manner to improve the life of the inhabitants. Smart city focuses on innovation and sustainability as well as the efficiency and quality of the life of the citizens living in the smart city.

The environment is a major component, it’s the whole of the surroundings where people work, live, eat and walk. It dictates the life of the residents in the cities. Smart city environment policy is aimed at having a clean and non-toxic environment favorable for all citizens. The smart city environment policy and projects are aimed at using technology to enhance and valorize the environmental assets such as lakes, rivers, wetland, and forests. The smart cities need to forge the way of towards socially inclusive communities with low ecological footprint. With the policies in the smart city environment, the people in the smart cities are set to benefit and enjoy the quality lifestyle with a green and safe environment.

Common technologies in the smart city environment

Internet based media has been number one on informing people in smart cities on various ways of maintaining a clean environment. To promote a smart city environment, the residents can now have to look at various parameters within the environment in the smart cities. The parameters include judicious land planning, attracting of natural conditions and environmental protection and pollution control. The environment can also be boosted through the use of smart energy which includes use of smart energy renewables and energy efficiency. Other parameters in smart city environment include sustainable buildings, water recycling and water efficiency as well as greening and diversity and sustainable transport.
With the use of modern technology, the majority of these parameters have been made easy and achievable. Citizens can now interact through internet based media and social media to co-operate together on developing the environment through the use of modern technology. The citizens can now use sensors that detect leakages in sewer lines as well as detect other forms of environmental pollution such as gas leaks other forms of air pollutions. In the modern technology, the citizens can also practice indoor agriculture in the various empty buildings around smart cities through the use of LED technology. One can use compacts indoor space to produce consumable food such as mushrooms. Other common technologies in the smart city environment include the use of the smart phone apps that enable the citizens in the various cities to file city complains about the environment publicly. Citizens can take an initiative of fixing the things that fellow citizens are talking about. The citizen’s design web such as in New York advise the residents about overflowing sewers. Citizens can also be sensitized and use modern water recycling systems to recycle used water.

How smart city environment impacts citizens

Positive impacts

Through the smart city energy projects, the citizens have been impacted positively in how they live and how they conserve the environment. Firstly, citizens have learned on the modern ways of using water sparingly and recycling the used water. The modern smart city environment has also helped in improving the environmental quality in the urban areas through the emphasis passed on the mobile applications and the websites.

The citizens have now embraced family planning to control the huge number of people born in the cities since higher population leads to increased carbon emissions. There is also increased food for consumption in these cities through the use of indoor farming technology.

Negative impacts

For the cities to embrace the smart city environment policies, a lot has to be done, and a lot has to be sacrificed. The citizens in this cities have faced various challenges and shortcomings through these concepts. The first impact is the lack of sufficient money. This is not only one challenge, but it’s accompanied by the lack of control over how one spends money. This is accompanied by a challenge of how expensive these systems are to implement. An example has sensors in every home which is expensive to install.

Applications of the smart city environment

Smart city environment policies and projects can be applied in various fields of the respective city. One of the areas these systems can be applied is in the sewage companies where they can have sensors along the sewer lines to detect leakages. Sensors can also be applied in public transport where they can be placed on public transport vehicles to monitor set environmental parameters. The mobile apps can be used by various citizens to know what is happening in the environmental parameters and inform the authorities. These systems can also be applied in traveling commuter routes through wearing of sensors that gather data on aspects of air quality through displaying quality of the air.
